Young children have positive self images and high self esteem.
Identity and Self Esteem
Many people get their self esteem from
Who they are
What they look like - They compare their self images to others
What they have - Whose house is better and who drives the best car? Whose vacation was the most impressive this year?
Their accomplishments - What degrees do you have or what is your title at work? In colleges, professors strive for tenure, and, for special ceremonies, the professors all wear gowns that display their “accomplishments” and degrees.
Their work - Men, in particular, identify with their work. Ask a man to tell you about himself, and the first thing he will tell you is what he does for a living. His job is very closely linked to his self image and identity.
What is self esteem for a man? Men often get their self images from their work and their jobs.
