What are Chakra Symbols

What is Chakra? With so many forms of meditation, it is hard to keep the various meditations straight.

Chakra meditation is a form of yoga, and the chakra symbols represent energy centers in your body.

Chakra symbols and chakra meditation have their origin in ancient India, and the chakra meditations are still practiced today.

What are the Chakra Symbols?
What is Chakra Symbolism

In the West, we use seven chakra symbols. Each of the seven chakras represents a different energy center, which, in turn, represents a different energy system in our bodies.

In addition, each chakra has a color, as you can see in the picture.

Chakra colors, chakra meditation, chakra locations Here are the seven Chakras:
  1. Root or base Chakra: Is located at the base of the spine. It is often associated with the color red, element Earth, planet earth, and with family/tribal identity. The root chakra reminds us that we are part of the universe, part of nature.

  2. Sacral Chakra: It is located in the sex organs. It is associated with the color orange, element water, the moon, and with survival and reproduction, personal power, creativity and relationships. The sexual Chakra gives us energy and vitality.

  3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Solar Plexus): As it states, it is located in the solar plexus. It is associated with the color yellow, element fire, the sun, and with self-esteem, personal identity and control issues. It relates to the pancreas, adrenals, stomach, liver, gallbladder, nervous system, muscles and digestion.

  4. Heart Chakra: It is in the center of the chest. The color is green, and the element is air. It relates to heart – to love, the thymus gland, circulatory system, arms, hands, lungs and the overall health and balance of body and spirit.

  5. Throat Chakra: It is located in the throat. Associated with the color blue, element is akasha/ether, with choice, faith, self-expression, and communication. It relates to the thyroid, parathyroid, hypothalamus, throat, and mouth.

  6. Brow/third eye Chakra: Located in the center of the forehead and sometimes called the 3rd eye. The color indigo, intuition, reason and evaluation. It relates to the pituitary gland, left eye, nose, and ears.

  7. Crown Chakra: Located at the crown of the head. Associated with the color violet and with the integration of our spirituality. It is thought to be the gateway between the energies of the material Universe and the spiritual energy of Divine Source. It relates to the pineal gland, cerebral cortex, central nervous system, right eye.

What is Chakra Healing?

I’ll give you the simple explanation, in plain English. I’m hoping that purists will forgive me, if this is not absolutely technically correct! It WILL give you the gist of the process...

Each chakra has “swirling energy” and is able to transfer energy to other parts of the body. The chakra can influence both physical and mental parts of your body.

It is believed that chakras can be blocked, and so chakra clearing meditation can unblock a chakra, leading to healing and spiritual growth.

When you clear your chakras and energy goes from your first chakra (base of spine) all the way to your crown chakra, you can achieve god-consciousness and spiritual maturity and enlightenment. This is the goal of many who use chakra meditation.

So, if you’ve been wondering “What is chakra?”, this is the simple explanation. Of course, you can learn much more about the chakras taught in India--and it can get pretty complex. Many of the masters and experts have taken years to get where they are.

Get Started in Chakra Meditation

However, you can begin to use chakra meditation, and it can be effective for you--without spending years of practice.

One way to get started is to use this Chakra meditation CD.
