Time Stress Management

How Does Time Impact on your Stress Levels?

Time stress management and how it affects your stress levels and health.

Everyone perceives time differently. Whether you “don’t have time”, “need time”, are “using time” or trying to “save time”, “passing time”, the concept of time is affecting you. Some people believe you must be “on time” for a meeting, some believe you should show up a couple minutes late to appear not rushed or needy. Different cultures and upbringings influence how we perceive and deal with time.

How does time affect your lifestyle and enjoyment of life?

If time is a concern for you and you find yourself rushing about to complete daily tasks or don’t manage to complete your work on time, then its time for time stress management.

Environment

If you live in the city, then the pace of life surrounding you will be at a faster speed than if you live in a rural setting. In the city people tend to walk faster, talk faster and work faster to achieve. This quick pace of life can affect your stress levels and in turn your health and wellbeing. It depends on your ability to handle a quick paced life though. If you have overestimated your tolerance level for handling a fast paced life then you may experience detrimental physical symptoms. If you are burnout from living in the fast lane you may experience headaches, dizziness, physical breakdown, chronic trembling and even heart problems. Prolonged stress affects your health and your body.

Beliefs and Attitudes Irrational beliefs about time may include: “If I feel relaxed, I’m not achieving”, “I must get everything done now”, “Others will not get the job done as well as I can”, “I can only enjoy myself after I’m done”, “I must hurry!”, “I must succeed at everything I do”, “I have no control”.

Take some time to consider these beliefs and if they relate to you. Can you see another alternative to them? Many times our beliefs and attitudes about time affect our ability to be effective at using time stress management.

Workaholic

Work addiction affects your whole life. Someone who is addicted to work feels that working long hours and succeeding is the only way to go. They are completely focused on work and forget how to relax and unwind. Work addicts may be suffering from childhood issues they haven’t dealt with, so instead work hard to avoid the uncomfortable feelings. They live an unbalanced life as their career soars, marriages and friendships break-down, and they become moody and irritable and their physical bodies start to show the wear and tear with illness and disease.

A work attitude that is healthy keeps into perspective all aspects of life and puts them into balance. Leave time for social and intimate relationships, time for relaxation, down time, time for self, exercise, and basically time for personal happiness.

Changes

When something changes in your life it requires more time. Changes include: moving house, changing jobs, a death in the family, having a baby, a car accident, getting a raise, falling in love, your children leaving home, etc.

Its important to be aware of how changes affect your routines, relationships, roles and beliefs and attitudes. Severe stress symptoms stress symptoms may occur during transitions so its important to make use of time stress management to stay on top of the changes that affect you.
