Relieving Stress by Exercise
Why is exercise important?
Physical fitness is an essential component of overall health and wellbeing. An exercise program that suits your needs and time constraints as well as keeps you motivated improves your physical fitness.
Immediate benefits of exercise:
When we get stressed our bodies react with ‘fight or flight’ to protect itself. Exercise increases our heart rate and blood pressure and we breathe more deeply. More oxygen is circulated throughout our body.
As we concentrate on exercising our mind is focused on what we are doing which takes our thoughts away from our concerns and worries. Moving our joints and muscles also releases physical tension making it easier for our bodies to move more freely.
Also, when we exercise we release a hormone called endorphins which gives us a positive happy feeling. This is an excellent time to gain a clear perspective of our problem and come up with a solution or another way of viewing the situation.
Exercising also gives us cardiovascular fitness. A strong heart and circulatory system helps to maintain a quality life. Regular cardiovascular exercise helps to manage cholesterol levels. The good cholesterol (HDLs) increase with exercise, while the bad cholesterol (LDLs) decreases.
Working on our flexibility during an exercise routine ensures we have full performance levels in our joints to perform daily tasks.
Relieving stress by exercise:
Physical exercise improves our overall health and wellbeing. It relieves tension in our physical bodies, but also helps to relax our minds. Exercise also pumps endorphins throughout our body which gives us a positive feeling and thereby reducing tension. By relieving stress by exercise we maintain a healthy balance for optimum performance during our lives.
