Relaxing hobbies
Great for Stress Management

Relaxing hobbies are fun, but not all popular hobbies will be relaxing for you.

Knowing how to choose a hobby that is right for you--can help you reduce stress and tension--and even help you handle the stressors in your life more easily.

There are, of course, many ways to relax. But I think that fun hobbies are one of the best, because, not only do you reduce the stress in your life--you have a good time while you’re doing it.

And, as you may already know, laughter and joy are some of the very best medicine. They certainly are great for your mental health!

How to Find a Hobby

Finding a hobby that is right for you is simply a matter of looking at the requirements, your interests, and what you like to do in your leisure time.

I you’re really feeling stressed, you probably choked on the words leisure time, but I meant just that.

The first step is this process is for you to commit to having some time for yourself. Even though time for relaxation is extraordinarily important, many busy people just don’t take time for themselves!

Here are some other things to consider when choosing relaxing hobbies:

  • Interests - What kinds of things do you like to do? Fun hobbies for one person many not be so much fun for another. Do you like working with your hands or would you prefer collecting things? You need to consider what YOU like to do...
  • Skills - What activities are easy for you? If a new hobby is really hard to learn for you, it won’t be fun or relaxing. Choose a hobby that you will easily learn. For example, if you like to sew, you might enjoy knitting or crocheting, which are related hobbies. But you might not like training for and running in a marathon.

  • Knowledge - What do you already know about? If you loved trains as a kid, perhaps you would like to get into collecting model trains. Stamp collecting, on the other hand, might pose a huge learning curve for you--and so it might not be relaxing! Some people love to learn new things--others find it to be stressful. How do you feel about it?

  • Are you active or sedentary? - Exercise or physical activity is relaxing--but not so, if you absolutely HATE exercise! If you love physical exercise, consider a more active hobby. If you can hardly wait to get home to rest, consider choosing a hobby that is more quiet.

  • Outdoors or indoors? - Where do you feel most carefree and relaxed. One person may feel calm and serene in a wooded setting. Another, in the very same place, may feel tense and anxious because of the bugs!

  • Participant or observer - Sports events are a good example. Do you like to be part of the action--or just like to WATCH the action? Consider whether you want to join a group of guys who play basketball on Wednesday nights or watch games on T.V. Either way you can release pent up tension. But different people enjoy sports in different ways!

  • Alone or in a group? - Do you enjoy solitary activities--getting away from all the noise and stress? Or do you relax better when you are socializing in a group? The answer is different for different people...

So, finding a hobby is different for everyone. In fact, it is an individual choice, based on what you like to do, who you are, and how much time you have to spend on your new hobby.

However, if you’re looking for a fun way to relieve stress, do consider taking up a hobby. One that you will enjoy!
