The Psychological Effects of Stress The Signs and Symptoms

Of course you know when you are feeling stressed. But did you know that psychological stress can actually affect your ability to function well? Emotional stress can make you seem “scattered” and unable to focus on a conversation or read a document or book. When you are in the middle of a crisis, you have trouble making decisions, thinking things through, and even remembering small things that you do every day. For example, I remember one time a few years ago, I left my ATM card in an ATM machine on Easter Sunday. In the middle of a divorce, I was feeling stressed and was very distracted. I was so scattered, that I simply forgot to get my card from the machine, when I was finished with the transaction. As a result, my life became even more stressful--as I worried about the missing card, until I was able to get it from the bank, when they opened--two days later! Stress affects each of us in slightly different ways. Here are some ways that you might be affected:
- Anxiety
- Many of us feel anxious or nervous.- Restlessness
- You might be unable to sit or stand still, feeling that you just need to keep moving.
- Worry
- You may be unable to sleep or concentrate because you are distracted by worry.
- Irritability
- You may be easily frustrated and impatient with others.
- Depression
- You may feel sad and that your situation is hopeless, with no way out...
- Anger
- Some people react to stress by becoming angry.
- Feeling insecure
- You may just want to crawl into a hole and hide.
- Lack of focus
- Inability to pay attention in meetings or even to instructions given by your boss.
- Burnout
- feeling totally overwhelmed and exhausted.
- Forgetfulness
- even remembering to get something on the way home, for dinner.
- Overeating
- Some people snack constantly, when under stress--or eat food (like chocolate), trying to feel better emotionally. Food does not cure emotional stress.
- Undereating
- Others feel nauseous or sick to their stomachs, and they don’t eat enough.
- Drug or alcohol abuse
- turning to drugs or alcohol does not solve any problems!
- Increased smoking
- Crying spells
- under stress, many people cry easily--at work, watching a movie, hearing a sad story.
- Relationship conflicts
- When you are feeling stressed, you are not as patient as usual and more likely to have angry outbursts.
