Overcoming test anxiety is not impossible, but it does take some effort.

Learning test anxiety strategies can raise college exam test scores and improve your chances to land a job.

How can this be so? Stress and anxiety produce high levels of cortisol, and cortisol impairs the hippocampi in your brain—causing you to forget things.

So, you aren’t imagining things when you feel stressed and think you’re having trouble remembering things—you really are having trouble!



Having a bad memory can lead to more stress, which leads to poor self-esteem, higher levels of cortisol, more impairment of the hippocampi and more memory loss.

There are a number of false beliefs about exam anxiety. If you know what is NOT TRUE, then you will find overcoming test anxiety to be easier.

Here are some of the False Beliefs about test anxiety in students:

  • Test anxiety is a mental illness - False. It is not a mental illness. Test anxiety is a learned behavior.

  • Students are born with test anxiety – False. Students develop test anxiety over time—often through their own thoughts, self-talk and behaviors.

  • Test anxiety will always be a problem for you – False. In fact, you can easily unlearn the unhealthy test anxiety behavior.

  • Any level of anxiety prior to a test is bad – False. Some stress actually motivates you and keeps you on your toes. This is good stress or eustress.

  • You have test anxiety because you didn’t prepare well. – False. While it’s true that you will probably have anxiety if you simply don’t prepare for an exam, true test anxiety occurs—whether or not you have prepared well.

  • If you just work harder and prepare better, you won’t have test anxiety – False. There are many students who work hard and prepare well—who still have test anxiety.

  • You just need to relax to make test anxiety go away – This one is a little trickier. The truth is that most people just can’t relax on command. However, if you learn to improve your self talk and reprogram your brain for relaxation and success, you can relax and actually enjoy taking exams!



The truth about overcoming anxiety is that it is possible to conquer college test anxiety so that you can take exams in a relaxed manner and do your best.

Conquering test anxiety does take some effort on your part, and it will take some time. But, the good news is that your efforts will be rewarded and you will be able to relax while you study, and relax during exams!
