Natural Stress Relief with Essential Oils

Essential oils are great as a natural stress reliever. They are the pure essence of a plant. When used properly they offer both psychological and physical benefits. There are many types and grades of essential oils. Its important to get a good quality one to use as a natural stress relief. Do not use the essential oils/aromatherapies that are made for scent only. They do not have the quality necessary to relieve stress or physical and psychological symptoms.

Peppermint Foot Splash:

1 1/2 cups distilled water 30 drops grapefruit seed extract liquid concentrate 1 tablespoon dried peppermint leaves (or drops of peppermint oil)

Crush the mint leaves and put all the ingredients in a glass jar. Let it sit at room temperature for 2-3 days. Then strain it and store it in a glass jar to use Strain the mixture and store it in a glass jar. The mixture can be stored in the refrigerator up to three weeks.

Lavender Rose Bath

Add equal parts of rose petals, lavender and chamomile in a bowl and fill with boiling water. Let seep for 10-20 minutes. Strain and pour remainder into bath.

Alternatively, place herbs in a breathable bag and tie tightly. Let steep in a tub of warm water while relaxing.

Essential Oils Bath

8 drops lavender oil 8 drops rosewood oil

Under running bath water put drops of oil. Unwind in a bath made especially for relieving your stress.

Bath Hints:

- Put Epsom salts in your bath to relieve aching muscles.

- Orange is known for its uplifting qualities – use essential oils or slices of orange in your bath for an invigorating feeling. Orange is relaxing, calming and helps to soothe the nerves while uplifting the mood.

- To help relieve anxiety use 5 drops of lavender, geranium and rose. Geranium is excellent for easing anxiety and bringing emotional balance.

- Add passionflower leaves or flowers to your bath for serenity and relaxation.

Natural Stress Relief with Herbs

During times of stress the physical body suffers from symptoms such as feelings of tiredness, low in energy, irritability, a low immune system, etc. Herbs can be used as a natural stress relief to assist with boosting the body’s energy, help fine tune particular body organs such as the adrenal glands and the liver and assist in recovering strength after a stressful period as well as uplifting the mood.

Essiac Tea: Try Essiac Tea to help rid your body of harmful toxins. It has amazing cleansing properties. Essiac tea is a powerful combination of herbs: blessed thistle, burdock root, kelp, red clover, sheep sorrel, slippery elm bark, turkish rhubarb root, and watercress. St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum): Uplifts the mood, has antidepressant qualities, can be used for anxiety and sleep disorders. St. John’s Wort is excellent for for natural stress relief because has the ability to enhance the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. It takes a few weeks to take effect.

Valerian: Is different than the drug known as Valium. It is a herb well known for its sedative properties and is used to help get a good night’s sleep. It has been used for many years in traditional Chinese and Indian medicines for nervousness and insomnia. It promotes a restful sleep that does not have the heavy side effects of pharmaceutical medicines. Its important for a natural stress relief to help relieve anxiety and stress and give an overall relaxed feeling. Be aware of its sedative qualities when driving or needing to maintain alertness.

Ginseng: Stimulates the nervous system and may increase insomnia. It is not recommended during times of extreme stress and anxiety (similar to caffeine). However, it is beneficial in boost the immune system to help recover from a stressful period. It can be used to rejuvenate the body and helps restore energy. Panax ginseng is the Asian ginseng that may lower blood cholesterol, improve vitality and concentration and is known as an anti aging remedy. It is helpful to use before an exam to help with memory and alertness.

It is not suggested for anyone with an anxiety disorder, asthma, depression or who is pregnant. If you suffer from headaches from caffeine, you may experience the same with ginseng. As the Asian ginseng is ‘warmer’ it may increase menstrual flow. American ginseng has similar properties and actions but is considered ‘cooler’.

Siberian ginseng increases endurance and general health and helps to boost the immune system.

As with all ginsengs it is a stimulate and can increase mental alertness, but is not suggested during times of extreme stress and anxiety.

Milk Thistle (St. Mary’s Thistle): Helps to heal the liver from environmental and emotional stress. Medications, alcohol and stress can damage the liver. Milk Thistle helps to protect the liver from damage and can help to regenerate it back to health.

Ginko Biloba: Is an excellent herb to boost your brain power. As a natural stress reliever it has positive effects on the nervous system and helps mental performance by increasing blood flow to the brain. It has been seen to benefit anxiety and depression, concentration and alertness and helps circulation. As with most herbs, it is best taken consistently for a few weeks for it to be effective. It has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years to rejuvenate the brain.
