How Does Stress Affect The Nervous System?
How does stress affect the nervous system: When situations and events are too much for you to handle your nervous system releases a large amount of stress hormones.
The Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) triggers the body to react with a “fight or flight” response for protection. The “flight or fight” response to stress was useful to our ancestors who had a need to defend themselves against wild animals or hunt for their food. But this “flight or fight” response to paying bills, or being late for work is detrimental to our health!
How does stress affect the nervous system?
The Sympathetic Nervous System responds rapidly to mobilize the body’s defence mechanism, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, pupil dilation, perspiration, cardiac blood flow, breathing becomes deeper and faster, adrenaline is produced which stimulates the heart and other organs to help defend the body.
The side effects of stress:
The Sympathetic Nervous System also reduces certain systems such as bowel movements and digestion which are not needed in stressful or dangerous situations. You might have noticed that when you suffer from extreme or prolonged amounts of stress that you might experience diarhea, constipation and, a slow or poor digestive system.
During prolonged and severe stress the nervous system is working on overdrive and has detrimental effects on the body and health.
How does stress affect the nervous system...
The Parasympathetic Nervous System:
The Parasympathetic Nervous System assists in relaxing the body: slowing the heart rate, constricting the pupils and generally returning to a state of relaxation.
When our body is relaxed and in a balanced state it is better able to maintain health.
You can trigger the workings of the Parasympathic Nervous System by implementing regular
relaxation techniques
such as yoga, walking or taking up a hobby.
Meditation Therapy
is also known as a beneficial way to relax the body and start the healing process.

How does stress affect the nervous system?
There is GOOD and BAD stress:
Stress is an important factor in our lives. We cannot function effectively in life without a certain degree of stress, and the positive type of stress we’re talking about is called EUSTRESS.
Good stress is called EUSTRESS and is related to a situation or event that is enjoyable and not considered a threat. You would experience Eustress in a situation that you find motivating or inspiring.
We can consciously use Eustress to create an ideal situation for optimum achievement. When working to achieve this state the trick then is not to eliminate stress from our lives, but to learn to manage it at an appropriate level such that it activates, invigorates and motivates us into action; stimulating creativity, empowering resourcefulness and energizing behaviours towards optimal living.
When you choose to live an Optimal Lifestyle you naturally choose an effective stress management plan to create your own state of Achievement, Success, and
Wellness.
The BAD stress is called DISTRESS.
There are two types of distress (we call these 'stress' for short)...these are: Acute Stress and Chronic Stress.
Acute stress comes and goes quickly and is intense, such as hearing a fire engine siren behind you while driving. As the vehicle passes you by your body is able to relax knowing there is no continuing threat.
Chronic stress continues for long periods of time such as going through a court process or working in a job you hate with people who you don't get along with. Chronic stress has detrimental effects on your body.
How does stress affect our body and health?
DISTRESS decreases your body's defense mechanisms increasing the chance of disease and illness, and even heart problems or cancer.
A balanced lifestyle of good stress and bad stress keep us motivated, but not run down. A good way to keep in balance is to do regularly schedule in relaxation techniques such as walking, meditation and yoga.
Stress, and the ability to cope with it, influences a person’s health.
