Headache Danger Sign

A headache danger sign or signal tells you that you need to get a doctor involved, as a condition more serious than simple tension, could be causing your headaches.

While most headaches are simple stress or tension headaches, once in awhile, a headache can be a sign that there is something more serious going on in your body.

There are some signs and symptoms that can help you decide if you need to be checked out by your doctor.

Paying attention to your headaches and any changes in your body can help you get the help you need, if you are one of these rare cases…

Headache symptoms can be a signal of something serious.

When to See a Doctor

I don’t want to be an alarmist, as most headaches are not serious—even if they do hurt a lot!

For example, many stress headaches are very painful, but there is no underlying disease present.

However, in some cases, there is an underlying disease or medical problem. And, in these cases, you need to see a doctor.

Here are danger signs to look for:

  • Sudden, severe headache – This can be caused by a minibleed or by a stroke. A minibleed is a small blood clot inside the skull. A minibleed is often a warning that a stroke will occur.

  • A Headache that Awakens You - If a headache awakens you in the middle of the night, you need to seek medical attention immediately. If you’ve had a stroke, the sooner you see a doctor, the better—so don’t wait until morning!

  • Headache with Convulsions - especially if you have had a blow to the head. In this case, you need to see a doctor immediately.

  • Headache with Confusion or Loss of Consciousness - While you often feel bad with a headache, mental confusion is not normal for a headache.

  • Headache after a Blow on the Head - This can be an indicator of a head injury.

  • Headache with Pain in an Eye or Ear

  • Headache in an Older Person Who Usually Doesn’t Have Headaches

  • Headache with Fever - This can be the sign of a serious infection.

If you or someone you know has a headache with a headache danger sign, you need to get the person with the headache to a doctor. Any of these danger signals could mean that there is a more serious condition present. And time is of the essence…
