Effects of Insomnia
And Sleep Deprivation

Sleeplessness Affects Your Performance

The effects of insomnia can be just an annoyance or they can lead to serious sleep problems.

Sleep deprivation can affect your performance at work, at home or at play.

Everyone sleeps, and we all instinctively know that it’s a good thing to get a good night’s rest.

But, exactly why is that?

If you go for long periods, without getting sufficient sleep, how does that kind of stress affect your health and your immune system?

Sleep Deprivation
The Effects of Lack of Sleep

While it is true that everyone needs a different amount of sleep, if you get too little sleep for YOUR body, you will start to see some negative effects from sleeplessness.

The effects of insomnia can really affect your daily life, and sometimes a little stress management or learning new ways to relax is in order.

Here are some of the effects of lack of sleep:

  • Poor Concentration - When you have sleep problems, you can have difficulty concentrating. This can affect you when you work, take exams, go to an interview for a job or even when you are having a conversation.

  • Lack of Judgment - When you have lost sleep, you may have poor judgment. It’s almost as though your brain says, "I’m going to take the easy way out on this one. I’m just too tired to think!".

  • Accident Prone - When you have been unable to sleep, your reactions (both physical and mental) are slowed. People who are tired get hurt more often at work, and they can have serious accidents elsewhere, as well.

  • Moodiness - Did you ever notice that you feel grumpy with a lack of sleep? That you tend to be short or impatient with others? You are not alone. Sleep deprivation can make you moody.

  • Auto Accidents - Falling asleep at the wheel is not uncommon for people who have insomnia. In fact, over 100,000 car accidents a year are attributed to drivers who had too little sleep.

  • Too Much Cortisol - When you are sleep deprived, your body produces more cortisol. Increased cortisol levels over time, can lead to an increased risk for diabetes, memory deficits and it can lower your resistance to disease.

  • Delusions and Hallucinations - While this doesn’t happen for most people who have a sleepless night or two, prolonged sleeplessness can be serious. When I worked in mental health, we often admitted people who "had not slept for two weeks".

We were not just being kind because a person could not sleep. The clients who had not slept for so long, often were hearing and seeing things that were not there. Lack of sleep was the reason.

While the causes of insomnia may vary from person to person, one thing is for sure. We all need to get sufficient sleep that is uninterrupted. And when we can’t sleep, the quality of our lives is affected—in many ways!
