Diaphragmatic Breathing

Use Deep Abdominal Breathing
for Stress Relief

Diaphragmatic breathing is also known as deep breathing, deep abdominal breathing, belly breathing, costal breathing, tai chi breathing or even yoga breathing.

Deep breathing can help you relax and has many benefits.

Children know instinctively how to breathe deeply, and, with practice, as adults we can regain the benefits of deep abdominal breathing.

Since breathing is natural and unconscious, most of us don’t even know whether we are breathing deeply or shallowly.

Learning to breathe deeply , can improve your health
and your ability to handle stress and anxiety.

What is Diaphragmatic Breathing?

Deep abdominal breathing, or diaphramatic breathing, is simply using your diaphragm to breathe, rather than using your chest and flexing your rib cage to breathe.

To breathe diaphragmatically, or by using your diaphragm, you need to draw air into the lungs, at the same time expanding your stomach instead of your chest.

Because many people carry tension in their backs, stomach or chest, deep abdominal breathing can seem to be more difficult than breathing from the chest.

Belly breathing or deep breathing is a healthier way to breathe because you actually get more oxygen when you are breathing deeply.

Benefits of Deep Breathing

So, why all the fuss about deep abdominal breathing?

There are quite a number of benefits to be gained by learning to breathe deeply . The first, not to be minimized, is that you actually breathe in more oxygen.

As you know, oxygen is needed in every part of our bodies, and oxygen starvation can actually cause degenerative disease and premature aging. Here are some more benefits of deep breathing:

  • Helps to flush toxins from our bodies. Toxic substances are eliminated through our breath.

  • Normalize blood pressure. It is well known that deep breathing can help to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range.

  • Increase stamina and energy

  • Help you to relax and decrease stress levels - learn to do this when you feel a need to relax...

  • Sleep better and more soundly

  • Improve your performance in sports and athletic activities

Those are just a few of the benefits to be gained by learning to breathe deeply.

Diaphragmatic breathing is not rocket science, but you do know how to do it properly in order to get the most benefit from deep breathing.

Just this one little thing-- learning how to breathe deeply in the correct manner--will improve so many areas in your life. It may be all you have to do to get your life back on track.

And learning to breathe deeply will not take hours of your time. Just a little practice!
