Definition of Counselling
How is Counseling Used?

Knowing the definition of counselling is important, so that you will know what to expect from counseling.

Counseling is a process in which the counselor, or therapist, helps you understand the causes for your problems and guides you through the process of learning to make good life decisions.

Initially, counseling can be a bit painful, as you will be discovering some unpleasant things about yourself.

However, as you progress, the sessions will be easier and easier, as you learn to be more positive, and to make better decisions.

The counselor’s role is to guide you through the process--NOT to tell you what to do.

You may find that cognitive behavior therapy or hypnotherapy will be used by your therapist...

What is a Counseling Session Like?

If you have never been in counseling before, you may be wondering what to expect. Many people who have never been in counseling, have very distorted ideas about counselors and counseling.

Here are some things that you can expect:

  • The definition of counseling states that it is a theory-based process which helps clients to resolve every day life issues and concerns. That simply means that your counselor will work to help you solve your own problems.

  • You will work, with your counselor, to understand WHY you have a problem. You’ll work to find out what dysfunctional beliefs you have.

  • The purpose of counseling is to enable you to resolve your issues so that you can have more happiness and joy in your life.

  • You will be more self-aware--understanding WHY things happen in your life.

  • Every counselor has a Code of Ethics and Code of Practice which they must follow to ensure professionalism.

  • A counselng session is tailored to each client’s unique situation, values, culture and needs. A good counselor will not try to change your religious beliefs or cultural traditions.

  • Together the counselor and client address the problem and identify options for change and a preferred consequence.

  • A counseling session helps the client create positive changes.

  • Sometimes you just need a little extra support during a major life event. A counselor can be there to help you through the tough times.

  • Good counselors are not judgmental.

Are All Counselors Alike?

If, by some chance, you go to your first counseling session--and you don’t feel comfortable with your therapist--you need to find another counselor.

It is really important that you have trust in your counselor and that you feel that she is a knowledgeable therapist.

If you don’t have faith in your counselor, you will be wasting both your time and his.
