Knowing the definition of counselling is important, so that you will know what to expect from counseling.

Counselling is a process in which the counselor, or therapist, helps you understand the causes for your problems and guides you through the process of learning to make good life decisions.

Initially, counselling can be a bit painful, as you will be discovering some unpleasant things about yourself.

However, as you progress, the sessions will be easier and easier, as you learn to be more positive, and to make better decisions.

The counselor’s role is to guide you through the process--NOT to tell you what to do.

You may find that cognitive behavior therapy or hypnotherapy will be used by your therapist...

  • A counselling session is tailored to each client’s unique situation, values, culture and needs. A good counsellor will not try to change your religious beliefs or cultural traditions.

  • Together the counsellor and client address the problem and identify options for change and a preferred consequence.

  • A counselling session helps the client create positive changes.

  • Sometimes you just need a little extra support during a major life event. A counselor can be there to help you through the tough times.
