Sometimes we are not able to change our environment, but we can change how we live our lives and how we deal with stressors.
Ways of coping with stress include being aware of our reaction and changing them to relieve the stressful situation.
Some people react to situations with with fear, anger or guilt. Deal with stressors by being aware of your initial emotional reaction. This is called emotional regulation.
Another way to cope with stress is problem solving. Here you focus on dealing with situations constructively. You make an assessment of the type of stressor you are dealing with and choose an action that best suits.
Ways of Coping With Stress
Five coping strategies by Cohen and Lazarus (1979). Choose one to solve your problem.
1. Information seeking: You try to figure out why such a stressor is happening. You ask questions of yourself or others to find information.
2. Direct action: Getting involved in trying to stop the stressor. (Joining an action group, handing out flyers, etc.)
3. Inhibition of action: You stop yourself from penting anger or doing harmful actions on the stressor.
4. Interpsychic efforts: You use self-talk to handle the stressor better.
5. Turning to others: You share your frustrations and feelings with others and work together to handle the stressor.
What is Meditation Therapy?
Meditation techniques are used to quiet the mind. When your conscious mind is calm and peaceful, without worries or chattering thoughts you become open to insights and clarity.

The benefits of meditation on the body and mind is to return them to a state of peaceful balance, which will in turn improve and maintain health.

Social Readjustment Rating Scale

The Schafer coping model suggests three ways of coping with stress: Option 1: Alter the Stressor by seeking to change the situation, change the physical stressor, be aware of life changes and space them out if possible,
manage your time,
talk to the person about their stressing behaviours. Seek to change the stressor or stressful situation.
Option 2: Adapt to the Stressor:
Manage
self talk, beliefs and attitudes,
control physical responses with
breath work,
and
diaphragmatic (abdominal) breathing,
and
progressive muscle relaxation.
Also, manage your actions with effective listening skills, being assertive when necessary and
use appropriate
communication.
Keep your stress levels under control with proper nutrition, plenty of sleep, and
exercise.
Included in this options is other ways of coping with stress such as social support, money, community services,
counsellors,
church organisations. Also, avoid unhelful reactions to stress as alcohol or drug abuvse, overeating, smoking, escapism, abuse, blaming. Option 3: Avoid the StressorSometimes its best to just completely avoid and stay away from the stressor and stressful situation. Consider how you might benefit from the stressor, how detrimental is the impact of stressor, what are the cons of the stressor. Is it best to avoid it altogether?

Change happens in everyone's life. Everyone deals with it different. Sometimes a change in your life can cause you stress. Though if you are flexible towards transition, and prepare yourself mentally and emotionally, then change can be welcomed and looked forward to.
