College Binge Drinking

College binge drinking is far too common on the campuses of even the best colleges in the country.

But it is possible for students to avoid binge drinking on college campuses by using the tips below.

Some students on college campuses seem to live for the weekend, and their next drinking binge. Of course, they are often the same students who are performing poorly—and will soon be dropping out of school.

You know the pattern. It starts with a relaxing drink before studies or bed.



Later, the weekend party drinking starts on Friday afternoon. Then Thursday evening. Then Thursday morning and finally, before it becomes an everyday event, the party starts on Wednesday—leaving little time for classes or studying.

It’s easy to get caught up in the wild college parties on campus. Most of us want to have a good time.

However, with the high stress levels that college students face, drinking for stress relief can quickly get out of hand.

And binge drinking can lead to addiction, depression and alcoholism—which are becoming more and more common on college campuses.

Heavy drinking is not harmless. It can ruin your body, your mind and your mental health.

So, how do you have a good time, but also make sure that you aren’t going too far with your drinking habit?

Here are some tips to help you keep your drinking under control:

  • Choose wisely - Choose your friends and your parties (or frat houses) wisely. Some groups have a reputation for wild parties and excessive drinking. Choose parties and friends that keep things in moderation and don’t let drinking, booze and sex get out of hand.

    If you go to parties where everyone has a good time, but they don’t end up stone drunk, it will be easier to keep your drinking under control. College binge drinking is a decision!

  • Manage stress in other ways - Alcohol is often used to relieve stress. And, in fact, it does help to relax you—initially. However, with continued use, it becomes necessary to drink more alcohol (more often) in order to get the same relaxing effect.

    Take some time to exercise or play sports. Learn healthy relaxation techniques. Manage your time better so that you won’t feel stressed about not getting things done. Prepare for classes so that you will feel relaxed when you attend. Keep your life in balance.

  • Don’t think in black and white - You don’t have to quit drinking entirely. Allow yourself a little leeway in this area. You can enjoy a relaxation drink or two with friends and the world won’t end!

  • Listen to your body - Excessive drinking is harmful to your brain and your body. You will feel its effects. So, if you are having negative symptoms and finding it hard to concentrate, difficult to summon up energy and you are not feeling well in general, consider cutting back on your drinking.

  • Change your thoughts - It can be really hard to say “no” to the next drink—and, as you drink more and more, saying “yes” becomes easier and easier. You think only of the present, without considering what the consequences of your next 4 drinks will be.
