Chakra Meditation

Relieve Tension and Stress, and Bring Peace of Mind

A Chakra Meditation using the concept of chakras originating in India. The word chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning wheel or circle. Chakras are seen as whirling vortexes that are centres of energy which connect mind and body.

We all know that stress affects our health. Chakra theories suggest that to maintain a healthy body the chakras need to be cleansed and balanced. A chakra meditation relaxes your mind and body. Bring your focus on the chakra colours and leave your worries and stress behind.

There are many chakras in and around our bodies. Six main ones are in the physical body itself with another main one above the crown chakra. These are known to be the colours of the rainbow, but others have seen them different colours. For our purposes in this chakra meditation, we will envision them as the rainbow colours.

Below: A Chakra Meditation to Relieve Tension and Stress

Meditating with the chakras is to envision each one in its colour and place in the body. With concentration on the particular colour you imagine each chakra being cleansed and balanced.

The chakras and their colours:

1. Root or base chakra: Is located at the perineum. It is often associated with the colour red, element Earth, planet earth, and with family/tribal identity. It relates to the adrenals, kidneys, spinal column, colon, legs, and bones.

2. Sacral chakra: It is slightly below the navel. It is associated with the colour orange, element water, the moon, and with survival and reproduction, personal power, creativity and relationships. It relates to the ovaries, testicles, prostrate, genitals, spleen, womb, bladder.

3. Solar Plexus chakra (Solar Plexus): As it states, it is located in the solar plexus. It is associated with the colour yellow, element fire, the sun, and with self-esteem, personal identity and control issues. It relates to the pancreas, adrenals, stomach, liver, gallbladder, nervous system, muscles and digestion.

4. Heart chakra: It is in the centre of the chest. The colour is green, element air. It relates to heart – to love, the thymus gland, circulatory system, arms, hands, lungs and the overall health and balance of body and spirit.

5. Throat chakra: It is located in the throat. Associated with the colour blue, element akasha/ether, with choice, faith, self-expression, and communication. It relates to the thyroid, parathyroid, hypothalamus, throat, and mouth.

6. Brow/third eye chakra: Located in the centre of the forehead and sometimes called the 3rd eye. The colour indigo, intuition, reason and evaluation. It relates to the pituitary gland, left eye, nose, and ears.

7. Crown chakra: Located at the crown of the head. Associated with the colour violet and with the integration of our spirituality. It is thought to be the gateway between the energies of the material Universe and the spiritual energy of Divine Source. It relates to the pineal gland, cerebral cortex, central nervous system, right eye.

Chakra Meditation Technique:

To balance and cleanse the chakras helps to remove tension and stress throughout your body and mind. Start from the base chakra and move upwards through the seven main chakras, including the crown chakra. Examine each chakra for impurities. Take your time to mentally envision each one being cleansed and balanced.

1. Make yourself comfortable and relax your body.

2. Breathe slowly and deeply for a couple of minutes.

3. Visualise the colour red in all forms – a red rose, crayon, apple, etc. Anything you can think of that is red – imagine it. Immerse your thoughts with red. Now using your imagination, move that brilliant red colour to your base chakra. Visualise it moving, swirling, cleansing your base chakra. Keep doing this until you see only a pure red colour within your base chakra.

4. Now do the same thing with your sacral chakra (below the navel). This chakra is orange, so you’ll be visualising the colour orange in many aspects – the orange fruit, flowers, butterflies, warming fires, the brilliant orange of the sun, etc. Absorb yourself in the colour orange. Once you have the colour orange firmly in your mind imagine it moving down to your sacral chakra and flowing through it and making it pure. The orange sun colour warming and spinning your sacral chakra removing all impurities. Imagine it cleansed.

Chakra Meditation Tip: Check each chakra for impurities and imagine any being washed away.

5. Move onto the solar plexus chakra and the colour yellow. Do the same with the colour yellow and purify the solar plexus chakra. First, imagine yellow in all its forms and immerse your thoughts with the colour yellow. Feel a tingle of energy swirling in your solar plexus chakra. Imagine it becoming pure and cleansed with the colour of yellow.

6. Slowly bring your attention to the colour green. Emerald green, grass green, your favourite green colour. Immerse yourself thoughts in the colour green. Imagine the green colour filling your heart chakra. Open your heart the cleansing colour of green. Watch your heart chakra swirl and grow with the purest of green energies. Visualise it cleansed and balanced.

Chakra Meditation Tip: Continue to breathe slowly and deeply.

7. Imagine the colour blue in all its forms – sky blue, water blue, blue butterflies & flowers, etc. The colour blue should be firmly in your mind before you move it to flow through your throat chakra. Your throat chakra soaks in and swirls the blue energies removing and cleansing all impurities. See the throat chakra completely cleansed.

8. Focus your attention to the colour indigo. Envelope your thoughts with everything indigo and then imagine the colour cleansing your third eye/brow chakra. Feel the intense pull and tingling sensation in your forehead as the vortex swirls and awakens your third eye. Imagine the colour indigo sparkling and cleansing your brow chakra.

9. The violet colour moves through your thoughts slowly building in intensity. When the violet colour immerses your thoughts and mind imagine it growing to fill your crown chakra. Concentrate on the violet flame as it grows in power and strength. Imagine your crown chakra completely purified.

Chakra Meditation Tip: Feel free to return to a chakra if needed.

10. Keep your concentration on the violet colour and watch it grow until it covers your whole body. Visualise all chakras cleansed and purified in their own colours. See the violet flame cleansing your mind, body and soul.

11. Visualise the pure divine white light coming down from the heavens and merging with the violet energy. Watch the violet colour turn pure white. Your whole body is now encompassed in a pure white light. Enjoy yourself within this peaceful energy for as long as you like.

This chakra meditation is best practise in a quiet place at first, but when you become confident at doing it you can imagine cleansing your chakras at any time of the day.
