Causes of Sudden Hair Loss
Hair Loss Causes

Stress Related Hair Loss

There are many causes of sudden hair loss, and discovering the hair loss causes often holds the key to how to stop hair loss.

Can stress cause hair loss?

The truth is that hair loss due to stress is common for both men and women.

And stress related hair loss is the most common kind of hair loss.

Handle your stress and your hair may return...

And many hair loss causes--that you might not have considered-- are, indeed, a form of stress hair loss.

However, not all hair loss is stress related hair loss.

Some cases of sudden hair loss are caused by an underlying disease. So it’s important to know exactly why you are losing your hair.

Sudden hair loss can often be corrected, naturally...

Hair Loss Causes

There are a number of causes of sudden hair loss, and knowing the reason for your sudden hair loss can help you reverse it--if that is possible:
  • Hormones - This is a common cause of female hair loss. Women often notice that they have thinning hair, about 2-3 months after delivering a baby. But, an imbalance in hormones can occur at any time, not just after having a baby. And this can occur in both men and women. Getting your hormones in balance may stop hair loss.

  • Thyroid disease - You can experience hair loss, whether your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroid) or overactive (hyperthyroid). This is another type of hormone inbalance.

  • Illness or surgery - Many people have stress related hair loss after they have had surgery. About 3-4 months after surgery, you may lose a large amount of hair. This is stress hair loss and should reverse itself in time.

  • Cancer and chemotherapy - This is another type of hair loss due to stress. You probably know someone who lost their hair during chemotherapy. After the chemo treatments are over, hair usually starts to grow again.

  • Medicines - If you lose your hair because of a medicine that you are taking, your hair loss will stop when you quit taking that medicine. Medicines that can cause hair loss include: blood thinners (anticoagulants), high blood pressure medicine, birth control pills, medicine for gout and anti-depressants.

  • Infection - Fungal infections like ringworm (common for dogs and kids) can also cause hair loss. With children, the first sign of the infection may be hair loss. You can easily get rid of the fungal infection with medicine--and the hair loss will be reversed.

  • Diseases or medical conditions - Sometimes the cause of hair loss is a disease like diabetes or lupus. Often losing your hair is the first sign of a more serious disease. For that reason, it is important that you don’t take hair loss lightly. Make sure you know the cause of your hair loss, before trying to treat it.

  • Your hairstyle - Hairstyles that pull on the hair follicles can actually cause hair loss. Some examples would be pigtails, ponytails, or cornrows.

  • Chemicals - If you dye or color your hair, straighten your hair or get permanents, the chemicals can damage your scalp, cause irritation and even cause scarring. Sometimes the scarring is not reversible. So, if you find that your scalp is irritated after you apply chemicals to your hair, and you are losing hair--consider whether you want to continue using those chemicals. You could have permanent hair loss.

There are many causes of sudden hair loss. Some are reversible, and some are not.

So it’s wise to consider your habits and lifestyle, if you are experiencing hair loss. If you make small changes in your lifestyle, you may be able to make permanent changes in the health of your scalp and hair.

If you have any concerns or doubts, make sure you consult with your physician, as you could be experiencing something more serious than simple hair loss.

Handle your stress and your hair may return...
