Causes of Stress
Biggest Causes of Stress

What are your biggest causes of stress? Since everyone reacts differently to situations and stressors, it's important to consider how you deal with your main causes of stress.

did you know that your thoughts and belief system have control over how you respond to stress, how you react to situations, and how you deal with people?

When you are feeling stressed or under pressure, take some time to consider how you feel and think about the situation. Think about how you are reacting to the situation.

If you need any extra help sorting out your thoughts and feelings, you might consider cognitive therapy, as it will help clarify your perceptions and very likely relieve some of your pent up frustrations and stress.

The causes of stress vary from person to person.

The main causes of stress lie in our environment and the world around us. The effects of stress on us--are determined by our stress management techniques!

Workplace Stress

Today's society is filled with anxiety and pressure as we go about completing daily tasks and responsibilities to survive in this fast paced world. Part of that fast pace is the desire and need to bring in an income and to meet financial obligations.

Many of us deal with workplace stress on a regular basis. What causes stress in the workplace?

  • Type of work you do
  • the people that you work with
  • having to deal with a difficult boss
  • long hours
  • low wage

When you have a better idea of what the particular stressors are in your workplace you can start to implement stress management work ideas and better manage your workplace stress.

Family and Relationship Stress

More causes of stress can be identified in the family and relationship area. We have all learned a different communication style as we've grown-up, and sometimes it is more harmful than good.

Often, with family members and people close to us, we end up in loud arguments, disagreements and mis-communications.

Family members can be demanding and needy, or loving and helpful.

Your family dynamics and the communication style you use, can be altered for the better by learning new ways of communication such as active listening. Developing good communication skills can go a long way toward improving your family relationships and reducing stress at home.

Health Related Stress

Unfortunately for some a major cause of stress can be their health.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is necessary to avoid health problems, such as cancer, heart disease, obesity, etc. What causes stress for one person, can actually cause physical illness for another.

And, when a life-threatening illness strikes, dealing with the illness is stressful for both the sufferer, and the family members involved. In fact, for many families, dealing with a seriously ill person changes the entire family’s schedule and lifestyle.

College Stress

College students have a number of causes of stress to deal with. They are expected to read, study and complete assignments--on an unprecedented level.

In addition, many college freshmen are away from home for the first time--separated from family and friends.

There are deadlines to meet and many students have never had to organize their schedules and meet so many deadlines before.

Without good coping skills and good stress management, many students fail in the first year of college!

Psychological Stress

Psychological stress is another cause of stress. Psychological stress comes from both internal and external sources which threaten our ego and identity (Freud).

In order to defend our wellbeing we may use denial, suppress emotions, try to rationalize, project negative emotions onto others, or hide behind humor.

When we are psychologically stressed out, our bodies are also worn out.

Your beliefs, attitudes and thoughts determine how you respond to stressors. If you were to change or adjust your beliefs about events or people, you would also affect your level of negative stress.

Regardless of what causes your stress, you have many different options to manage it properly and effectively. By learning effective stress management, relaxation techniques, taking responsibility for your own stress, and by adjusting your beliefs and attitudes, there is no reason that you can't overcome your causes of stress.
