Birds Watching
Bird Watching Stress Relief

Add Birdwatching to Your
Stress Management Activities

Birds watching is gaining popularity, and it is a great hobby for stress reduction.

Once you start bird watching, you will wonder why you waited so long to explore this interesting and relaxing sport...

As I write this, I am sitting in my office, looking out onto the river that runs beside our house. It is spring, and I am watching 6 osprey that are hunting (fishing) for their next meal.

The osprey like to sit on the branches of a few large trees that sit between our house and the water.

When they see a fish, they quickly swerve down to get it, then return to a branch, fish in claws, to work on their newly caught meal.

As much as I love to watch the osprey, I also love to watch our bald eagles. We see them all winter, and they also like to sit on the trees that the osprey are now occupying.

One of my favorite activities is bird-watching...

The bald eagles are slightly larger than the osprey (6-8 foot wing spread), and they are a bit more shy. We have to be quieter when we are outside, in order to watch them at work!

But large birds are not the only ones that are fun to watch. I love to watch friendly little blue birds and robins and cardinals, too.

Did you know that some birds mate for life? You can look forward to seeing the same couple--every year!

I'm glad that I learned the secrets and tricks to attracting birds to my home and backyard. And you can easily learn these secrets, too...

Why Choose Bird Watching?

Birdwatching is one of those relaxing hobbies that can be enjoyed by anyone. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, how old you are, or how fit you are.

You can still take pleasure in watching beautiful birds!

Here are some more advantages to birds watching:

  • You spend time outdoors. Ever feel like going outside, but you couldn’t think of an excuse to do so? Birdwatching is now your excuse...

Being in the woods, along a creek or river or even in your backyard, brings you closer to Nature.

And Nature is very relaxing. Being outside helps us to get rid of stress and focus on things outside of ourselves.

  • Exercise - If you go on bird walks or take hikes to see birds, you get mild to moderate exercise, depending on the walk that you choose. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress.

  • Socialize - Birdwatching can be a solitary activity - but it’s also lots of fun to meet others that enjoy it too. Half the fun is sharing your experiences. And there are bird watching groups and clubs to help you find others that enjoy this relaxing hobby. Having a support system helps you get through the tough times!

  • Stress management - Focusing on something other than your problems helps you to regain control of your thoughts and your life. It helps you to be a better problem-solver, because you are able to be calm when you work on solutions>
