Anger management is an important technique to learn to maintain heart health.

Responding by using anger may feel powerful and bring a feeling of exhilaration as the body is pumped with adrenalin. But anger does not solve the problem effectively.

Being specific about how situations are dealt with is important. Everyone handles situations differently. Watch the particular behavior patterns that occur during difficult situations and become aware of your responses.

Consider if you are feeling other emotions such as guilt or jealousy. Does your anger come on fast or does it slowly build? Do you have an urge to be right all the time? Do you use anger to intimidate people into doing what I want?

Pay attention to how you deal with situations and seek information, resources and new behaviors to improve the outcomes.

Anger management techniques include changing behavior patterns such as instead of screaming at the other person use a soft, quiet and calm voice.

It is best to be specific when making goals. For example, use quantitative goals such as to become angry less often, or when anger occurs stay angry for a shorter period of time and lessen the intensity of it. Also, aim to do a smaller amount damage – instead of hostile and hurtful words and behaviors – use problem solving techniques such as seeking information before you respond.
